Theatre Ouest End was proud to present the world premiere of The Covenant, winner of the prestigious 2017 Canadian Jewish Playwriting Competition at the Segal Centre last Fall. Written by Alice Abracen and directed by Murdoch Schon, and joined by a stellar cast and creative team, we were thrilled for the opportunity to share this powerful story with Montreal audiences at last.
Inspired by a true story, The Covenant is set in June, 1944 at Theresienstadt. Red Cross dignitaries are invited to marvel at this lively town which appears to be a haven for Jewish people in the heart of Czechoslovakia. Little do they know that this paradise is a ghetto and concentration camp, elaborately staged in order to conceal Nazi crimes against humanity. Forced to participate in the terrible charade, the ambitious politician Peter and the dedicated doctor Hilde find their idealism, their faith, and their love put to a terrible test. After he attended the staged reading at the Segal Centre in 2018, Martin Duckworth, a celebrated Canadian cinematographer and film maker wrote:
Your play struck me with the force of a Tolstoy novel, combining as it did a polished historical scholarship, a sophisticated awareness of the tension between politics and morality, a great sensitivity to the contradictions of human emotions, an extraordinary skill at dramatic structure, plus something that Tolstoy lacked, a sense of humour which helped immensely in grounding the story. I would feel very privileged if I could have the pleasure of re-reading your script. As of now, it feels like one
of those special works of art that has the quality of having leapt to life inevitably, the role of the artist being simply to reveal it to the world as received. Works that have an endless life. Please make sure it gets seen by people of all religious and political leanings,"
- Martin Duckworth
Reviews of The Covenant
We attended last night’s first performance of The Covenant, by Alice Abracen, at the annex theatre space of the The Segal Centre for Performing Arts. It was simply brilliant theatre. The spare but highly metaphoric set and lighting , the powerful acting, the subtleties of the darkly brutal yet incisive and illuminating script and its pacing, it was all truly moving at many levels. It was very important that the bulk of the audience were young (CEGEP students) who could find in this production the connections to the horrors and inhumanity of the Holocaust plainly derived while not delving into graphic displays of the horrid actions of that terrible time. I’m sure many of them walked away with a tangible understanding of the events, the process of dehumanization, and the morally ambiguous acts of betrayal.
As the child of survivors, I was of course shaken by the impact of this play, so needed to leave the theatre when the play ended to breathe air, but feel deeply that this story tells the truth properly and with depth. Congratulations on an excellent accomplishment. I hope the play will find performance spaces outside Montréal, as it well deserves a wide audience."
- Harry Rathjgot
Sometimes, when I want to believe I'm still young and emerging or whatever, I think of Alice Abracen as this tiny baby playwright sprung from the glorious mind of my mentor and dear friend Ann Lambert. But of course this is inaccurate. Alice has been honing her powerful voice for years and it's about time Montreal took note. Last night a strong, wise and mature playwright opened her play The Covenant to a rapt audience. I was fortunate to be among them. The cast is terrific, the design is meticulous, and the message is ultimately chilling for the current moment we find ourselves living."
- Michaela Di Cesare
I really enjoyed the play. Will be raving about it to anyone who will listen. I feel it's destined to become a classic." |
Great production, fantastic script, well worth seeing. Don't miss this!!" |
Don’t miss this moving and haunting play by Alice Abracen, a Theatre OUEST END production at The Segal Centre for Performing Arts… wonderful cast, direction and design! What else are you gonna do on these dark cold nights… get out and support some great local theatre!"
- Ellen David
Final call to attend Alice Abracen’s award-winning play The Covenant, which is based on a true story. It’s 1944, and a delegation from the Red Cross comes to Theresienstadt concentration camp to witness something remarkable: a small, tidy village inhabited and maintained by Jewish prisoners. But something more nefarious is of course happening behind the scenes. I was blown away by the performances of Jonathan Silver and Holly Gauthier-Frankel as a married Jewish couple caught up in the running of the ‘town’. Until Sunday, at The Segal Centre."
- Sarah Deshaies
A wonderful opening night for everyone behind Theatre Ouest End Presents The Covenant ! Go catch this beautiful feat of script and staging as soon as you can." |
I saw The Covenant on Wednesday night with my dear friend Tanya, and we were so moved. Such a powerful piece of theatre. It has really stayed with me." |
If you live in Montreal and want to see and support amazing theatre, I would recommend checking out The Covenant. (If you want to know more about the play, the interview below with the playwright Alice Abracen offers an excellent overview.) You will laugh, you will avert your gaze in horror, you will hope, you will despair, and you will question. Or, at least, that's what happened when I saw the play tonight. Powerful performances by the entire cast, brilliantly written and directed, this play is worth getting out to see."
- Andrew Katz
You will not want to miss The Covenant this season. An inspired and inspirational husband and wife are placed in an impossible situation, making decisions that force themselves to question their principles, their God, and each other. The minimalist set captures their stark reality perfectly, and the actors transition between their happier past selves and their present grim circumstances flawlessly. The Segal is so lucky to have Alice Abracen, one of Canada's premier playwrights, present her masterpiece. She draws you into their world by expertly layering their story, building and building the pace until you're heading full steam toward the dramatic conclusion (a perfect parallel to the trains that feature frequently). Abracen leavens their plight with humour and love, providing just the right reprieve, and reminding us that we can remain true to ourselves even in the worst situations. You will leave The Covenant deeply moved, and you will not soon forget it. Get your tickets now!"
- Sasha Mandy
I watched this powerful play by the brilliant Alice Abracen yesterday afternoon. It is hard to decide what I loved most about it, because everything from the writing to the setting to the direction to every single performance was exquisite. I was utterly immersed and could feel the love between characters and the deeply uncomfortable tension between others. I had to run right after the performance and the walk to the metro was surreal as I was choked up and couldn't get the characters out of my mind. I also learned so much. This is must-see theatre."
- Gina Granter
Wonderful, wonderful. Congrats to both of you, Alice and Laura!" |
Brava! A hearty congrats, Alice. The show was wonderful! |
Highly recommend this powerful play by Alice Abracen on until Dec 3. Gripping performances, a stunning set, an unforgettable story. Bonus: you get to see the former Saidye Bronfman Centre, designed by Phyllis Lambertin 1967."
- Anne Marie Adams
Went to see a wonderfully brutal play at The Segal studio last night. Go check out The Covenant by Alice Abracen.
- Alain Goulem
Last night I went to the Segal Centre for the preview of the play "The Covenant" by Montréal based playwright Alice Abracen - produced by Theatre Ouest End Presents The Covenant. It is such an important, well written play - about how to survive - or not - under extreme circumstances - set in Theresienstadt during WWII. Very humane, suits all. Great performers, beautiful space. The opening is tomorrow - time to buy tickets!"
- Lene Teigen
I loved it! And I hated it…. |
Go see this show! Support a brilliant young playwright-Alice Abracen, a new theatre company, and a very strong cast telling a deeply moving story. Worth every penny!" |
Thank you for this gripping and beautifully realized telling of what is a truly horrific story… All the more chilling as it can happen again.
As long as we continue to marginalize and call out and attack…
Brava Theatre OUEST END"
- Felicia Shulman-Rowat
We were in the audience for your final night and we were very impressed with the play and your performance. I completely agree with your statement that it is a beautifully written play. What I liked most was the complexity of the characters and the situations in which they found themselves - such a treat, in these times, to be spared caricatures and denunciations and given instead the difficult unclarity of existence. Your character, as you conceived her, though socially marginal and irreverent, had the intelligence to circumvent cynicism and selfishness and assess the situation clearly and grasp its seriousness. Well done!"
- Allister Neher
If you’re in Montreal (or even if you’re not) you must go see The Covenant at the The Segal Centre! Alice Abracen’s latest play is a brilliant, harrowing Holocaust tale that manages to break new ground. Complex, darkly funny, it will leave you thinking about what you might have done in the character’s shoes—with no easy answers—long after the lights are up. It’s on until December 3rd! Don’t miss it." |
The four of us thought it was terrific. I really appreciated the fine balance between the serious subject material and the moments of lightness, especially between the couple. |
Trying to find the words to express how I feel after seeing The Covenant at the Segal Centre tonight is rather difficult. This play was about the Holocaust, and so perfectly captured what people at that time were feeling - hope, fear, love (love always exists!), despair.. Humanity. What is all that together, if not Humanity?
These days, I see so many similarities in how Jews around the world are being treated to the way they were treated in the times leading up to World War II. That's not an exaggeration or an embellishment, simply a powerful and honest observation. So, it's times like these where we especially need our history to be taught and shared.
When I looked around the audience tonight, I knew I was surrounded by my people. But, I think everyone needs to see this play, not just Jews like myself, not just people with ties to the Holocaust. Non-Jews need to be learning too. You need to bear witness to our art, our theatre, our pain, and our joys. You may not understand it fully, but you'll come away from it having felt SOMETHING, and that's enough. That's a start
I really don't feel like I'm saying all I want to say in a coherent way (I'm just so moved!), so just buy a ticket. And listen to the Jews in your life when they share what's going on."
